Stewardship Over Speculation

Speculation depends on the next buyer. Stewardship depends on the asset itself. The distinction is simple, and it determines nearly everything about how capital is managed.

A speculator asks what an asset will be worth when it is sold. A steward asks what the asset will need in order to remain valuable. The first question looks for an exit. The second looks for continuity.

We do not buy assets in order to sell them. We buy assets in order to own them well.

Stewardship requires a willingness to spend on things that no buyer will notice. Drainage, structure, and systems rarely appear in a listing. They appear in the life of a building, and in the cost of neglecting them.

We regard ourselves as temporary custodians of permanent things. That view asks more of us than speculation would. It also gives us reason to believe that what we own today will still be worth owning tomorrow.
